  • Watercolor: Loose Impressionistic Florals

  • 10:30AM - 12:30PM
  • Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center 1017 Antebellum Circle Hendersonville, TN 37075
  • Watercolor
  • Adult
  • $208

You've seen it on Instagram — those loose, painterly florals that look like the paint just did what it wanted. Effortless. Alive. Nothing like the tight, careful work you've tried before. This is the class where you learn how that actually works.

The secret is in the underpainting. We'll start with a flowing color foundation, then layer expressive brushwork on top — peonies in a mason jar, wildflowers in a bucket, whatever blooms speak to you. You'll learn to trust the wet paint, let edges go soft where they want to, and resist the urge to fix everything. By the end of this session, you won't just have a beautiful painting. You'll have permission to let go.

What You'll Learn:

  • Underpainting with color — how to build a glowing foundation before adding detail
  • The loose, impressionistic brushwork behind the florals you love on Instagram
  • How to keep colors clean and avoid muddy mixes
  • Edge control: when to let it blur and when to sharpen up
  • How to use happy accidents instead of fighting them

This lemon tree is bright, loose, and the kind of piece you'll want to hang where you see it every morning.

We'll build up layered greens for the leaves and mix warm and cool color so the tree feels dimensional, not flat. Then my pen work goes on last — my signature move, and it solves everything underneath it. We'll finish with a few bare-paper highlights and a simple shadow to ground the pot.

Skill level: Beginners welcome — no experience needed

Supplies: All supplies included (pre-drawn outline provided)

We always grab a group photo at the end of class — it's part of the fun!

I don't offer refunds or credits for one-off classes. If you can't attend, you're welcome to find someone to take your spot, or ask about a supply kit instead.

  • Watercolor Fall Bear
  • Saturday, September 12
  • 2PM - 4PM
  • The Basement Marketplace, 14625 Lebanon Rd, Suite F, Old Hickory, TN
  • Watercolor
  • $45

Meet this scarf-wearing fall bear — cozy, a little grumpy, and about to teach you a color trick you'll use for years.

This class is also a real color-mixing lesson: there's no black anywhere in this piece. Every shadow is mixed from Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna. We'll also work through fur texture, warm and cool contrast, and placing the features so the expression actually lands — plus a few different textures in one piece: knit scarf, glossy lantern, metal accents. My pen work goes on last, then a scatter of falling leaves finishes it off.

If you've been wanting to try watercolor, or just want a fun Saturday with paint in your hand, this is the class — we're painting an Amalfi Coast lemon grove, a stone alley framed by lemon branches with the sea and hills fading out behind it.

We'll build real depth in the piece — background, middle ground, foreground — and mix warm sunny yellow against cool shadowed stone. I'll finish it with loose ink linework over the dry watercolor, same as I do on all my pieces, the detail that pulls the whole thing together. Paper's predrawn, so there's no drawing required. Just show up and paint.

Cardinals at the feeder. A bluebird on the fence post. A hummingbird suspended in midair over your garden. You watch them every morning — and now it's time to paint them.

This 4-week session is dedicated entirely to the birds you already know and love. We'll explore how to build soft, atmospheric backgrounds that make colors pop, how to use edges to suggest feather detail without painting every single one, and how to capture the personality of a bird in just a few confident strokes. No bird-painting experience required — just a love of the ones already visiting your yard.

What You'll Learn:

  • Soft atmospheric backgrounds using wet-on-wet technique
  • How to suggest feathers with edge control — no tedious detail required
  • Warm vs. cool color relationships and how they create depth
  • Painting the personality of a bird, not just its silhouette
  • Tennessee favorites: cardinals, bluebirds, hummingbirds, and more

  • Watercolor: Christmas Glow: Painting Light
  • Thursdays, November 12, 19, December 3, 10

Imagine painting a glowing candle — and having it actually look like it's glowing. A strand of Christmas lights that feels warm and magical, not flat and muddy. This is that class.

The revelation this session teaches is one students talk about long after class ends: you don't paint the light. You paint the darkness around it — and the light appears. We'll use strong value contrast, a wet-on-wet halo technique, and soft blending to create paintings that feel cozy, luminous, and genuinely beautiful. Everything you make this month is frame-worthy or gift-ready. You'll leave saying exactly what Megan aims for: "I can't believe I made that."

What You'll Learn:

  • How to paint glowing light sources: candles, lanterns, and string lights
  • The wet-on-wet halo technique — warm color blooming softly outward from center
  • Dark-around-light contrast: why your darks are the most important part
  • Soft blending for cozy, atmospheric edges
  • Simple holiday compositions with big emotional impact
