Imagine painting a glowing candle — and having it actually look like it's glowing. A strand of Christmas lights that feels warm and magical, not flat and muddy. This is that class.

 

The revelation this session teaches is one students talk about long after class ends: you don't paint the light. You paint the darkness around it — and the light appears. We'll use strong value contrast, a wet-on-wet halo technique, and soft blending to create paintings that feel cozy, luminous, and genuinely beautiful. Everything you make this month is frame-worthy or gift-ready. You'll leave saying exactly what Megan aims for: "I can't believe I made that."

Holly, berries, and pinecones, painted for your mantel.

Glossy red berries, deep green holly, and a couple of pinecones, painted in watercolor with loose ink lines and white gel pen highlights that make every berry catch the light. It's the kind of little painting you'll want to prop on the mantel and leave there all through December.

Pinecones sound scary? They're not. I'll show you how to build them one scale at a time, and nobody's turns out perfect.

We're painting a European Christmas market at night: string lights glowing over the stalls, snow catching the light as it falls, half-timbered buildings leaning into a cobblestone square.

We'll build a night-sky wash first, then work up to getting that market-glow to actually pop against the cool, dark around it. You'll paint falling snow, a clock tower and Tudor-style buildings in ink over your wash, and people shopping. No drawing skill needed. This one comes predrawn, so you can go straight to painting.

There's a spot on the mantle every December for a Nativity scene. This year, paint the one that goes there yourself.

We're painting Bethlehem: a stable under a night sky, a star bright enough to light the hillside, and the quiet glow of a manger below it. This piece has a lot going on, so we're working from a full predrawn outline, you're not drawing a thing, just painting, one guided step at a time.
